7 Awesome Mystery Movies

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? I absolutely love movies that keep me on the edge of my seat, constantly guessing characters’ motivations and the end result. There are loads of mystery movies out there, but very few truly end with a shocker. Here are my 7 favorite mystery movies that I highly recommend to anyone who loves a good mystery:

1. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

A deeply disturbing mystery film that will have you interested immediately. (Honestly, one of the best film intros I’ve ever seen – the video above is the epic opening credit scene). The actors give incredible performances and the plot is packed full of twists and turns you won’t see coming. Rooney Mara proves herself to be one of the most dynamic actresses out there, playing a troubled but brilliant woman whose complexity is both memorizing and terrifying.

I also recommend the books to readers who love a good, complex mystery read. Here are the other books in the series by Stieg Larsson:

  • The Girl who kicked the Hornet’s Nest
  • The Girl who Played with Fire

2. Shutter Island (2010)

I’ll pretty much watch anything with Leonardo DiCaprio in it, honestly, (Titanic will always hold a special place in my heart). This movie is a great mystery and has a lot of suspense. Demented patients, oddly behaving guards and a detective determined to figure out where exactly a missing patient ventured off to. A chilling mystery set in a chilling setting. I love it!

I also recommend Inception – also starring Leo.

3. Gone Girl (2014)

I was lucky enough to have picked up the book before seeing the movie. I would highly recommend both. (And anything written by Gillian Flynn). If you love mysteries and haven’t seen this one – you’re missing out. A missing wife, a very guilty-looking husband and a scavenger hunt. It’s one of the best mystery movies ever, in my opinion. Here are other books by Gillian Flynn I recommend and movies/series based on her writing:

  • Sharp Objects: Fantastic book. I just started watching the HBO mini-series based on it and from the 1st episode, it seems like they will do the book justice.
  • Dark Places: A WONDERFUL novel. There is also a movie based on the novel – of the same name – staring Charlize Theron. It didn’t get a lot of marketing but it’s an awesome, underrated film.

4. Identity (2003)

This movie has always stuck out to me as being one of the best mystery movies I have ever seen. The way everything is pieced together is masterful. The characters are compelling, interesting and every single one is also questionable. The ending of this movie was one I never saw coming. It’s a truly epic mystery flick that will keep you guessing & leave you utterly shocked by the end. Plus, the cast is stacked with some awesome talent.

5. Se7ven (1995)

Whenever I think of this movie, I still get chills. What an amazing mystery with the perfect mix of horror, suspense and intriguing characters. It’s a crime mystery focusing on 2 detectives (Brad Pitt & Morgan Freeman), desperately trying to track down a depraved killer who murders based on “the 7 deadly sins.” What a fantastic movie. And that ending: Dammmnnnnnn.

6. The Secret in their Eyes (2015)

I’ll admit that this film is a “slow burn”, as it focuses a lot on the characters and their lives surrounding a mystery. It’s a thought-provoking look into the lives of people, all of whom are connected by a terrible tragedy. It goes in-dept as to how one event totally changed a group of people, their relationships with each other and their overall lives. There is also a secret lurking, one that is a shocker at the end. It’s an ending I didn’t see coming and made me say, “Oh, wowwwwww”, at the end.

This one is currently available to watch on Netflix.

7. What Lies Beneath (2000)

A great movie from beginning to end. I’ll always love this movie. A woman believes she’s being contacted by a dead girl, so she breaks horror movie survival rule #3 – she attempts to make contact. It’s suspenseful, creepy and behind it all is a secret that someone is desperate to keep. It’s a must-watch if you haven’t already seen it.

These are my 7 faves when it comes to mystery movies but a few others come to mind such as: The Sixth Sense, Inception, The Bone Collector, Taking Lives and Devil.

I hope you enjoy these mysteries if you haven’t already seen them 🙂
