We’ve covered a lot of amazing, binge-worthy series so far. But, there are still more that are worth the “binge-worthy” title. Again, each series is based on your own preferences when it comes to television series. However, every show I mention, I have personally watched and thoroughly enjoyed . They all have their own merits.
Ozark
- 1 season – so far
- Drama/Crime
- Available on Netflix
I’ll admit that I was skeptical to watch this show at first but once I started, I simply couldn’t get enough. Staring Jason Bateman & Laura Linney, this show has a fantastic plot and very interesting characters. The premise: Marty Byrde (Bateman), is a financial consultant that is forced to move his family to the Ozarks, (a summer resort community). His reasoning for uprooting his family is due to a money laundering scheme gone terribly wrong, forcing him to pay off debt to a Mexican drug lord. Without giving too much away, this show has drama on top of drama and shows just how dysfunctional a family can really be, especially when so many lies are weaved into the mix. See the preview below:
Travelers
- 2 Seasons, so far
- Sci-fi/Action/Drama
- Available on Netflix
Me and my guy stumbled on this series during a lazy Sunday. I don’t think there was sufficient marketing for such a fantastic series, so we went in unsure of what to expect. Without giving away too much – people use social media to go back into the bodies of people who would’ve died in order to save a terrible future. I LOVE the characters in this series and all the problems they are forced to navigate around. It’s enthralling from the start and I cannot wait for the next season, (that HAS been approved). Trailer below:
The Magicians
- 3 seasons
- Fantasy
- 2 Seasons Available on Netflix, A Syfy series
This series has a highly interesting magic system and incredible characters. It’s witty, sexy, and has a whole lot of comedy. Think of it as an ‘R-rated’ “Harry Potter”. I can’t get enough of the story line and how well they mix hilarity with drama. It’s a grade-A show, in my humble, nerd opinion and is worth a watch for anyone who really likes fantasy, (especially fantasy with magical elements set in our world). From what I’ve seen – the series shows no signs of slowing down.
Mindhunter
- 1 season
- Crime/Drama
- Available on Netflix
I’m not embarrassed to admit that I spent my latest birthday binge-watching this series. The series is based on the book “Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unite. You get to see the likes of Ed Kemper, (who Cameron Britton plays with extraordinary accuracy) and other killers you may or may not have heard of. This is a must-see for anyone who has an interest in True Crime and will leave you hooked from beginning to end.
Sons of Anarchy
- 7 Seasons
- Drama/Action/Crime
- FX series, available on Netflix
I’ll just say it – this show isn’t for everyone. It’s based around a group of outlaw bikers who make their living through criminal means. That being said – the characters are great and far more complex than you would initially believe. There’s tons of drama, mid-day gun fights and police corruption. Mixed with that, there is also a deeper story of brotherhood, love and betrayal.
13 Reasons Why
- 1 season – Season 2 premieres May 18, 2018
- Drama
- Available on Netflix
This series, based on the book by Jay Asher, is about Hannah Baker – a teenage girl who commits suicide. Instead of leaving a note behind, detailing her woes, she takes it a step further and leaves behind 13 tapes, each of which discusses one person who caused her to take her own life. This show is VERY triggering for anyone who has suffered from depression, but is also very eye-opening. Again – this series isn’t for everyone as it goes into a lot of deep issues and is incredibly sad and emotional.
STRONG TRIGGER WARNINGS: self-harm, sexual assault, suicide
Altered Carbon
- 1 Season
- Sci-fi
- Available on Netflix
This series is based on the book series by Richard K. Morgan, (which I’ve read). The books are a lot different from the show, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Meet Kovacs, a very compelling and complex character who is awoken in a new body, on a new planet in a very different world than he remembers – tasked to solve a murder. You see, in this series, people can live forever. The rich, however, have taken a large portion of control. This series mixes crime with a serious dose of sci-fi and is one of my favorite newer series to date. I have very few complaints about anything in the series and loved it from start to finish. There’s lots of action but the best part – in my opinion – is the questions that is forces us to ask ourselves concerning humanity and morality.
American Horror Story
- 7 Seasons (3 worth binge-watching)
- Horror
- Available on Netflix, an FX series
Since every season is a new story – this series is hit or miss. I’m only recommending it as binge-worthy because of certain seasons. The seasons that are binge-worthy include: Murder House (season 1), Coven (season 3), & Roanoke (season 6). There are some merits to the other seasons, but not enough to coin them as binge-worthy. If I absolutely had to pick a fourth season worth watching – it would be Hotel (season 5), but only for very specific reasons. This show tends to try to shove WAY too many story lines together and they rarely all add up in the end (of the majority of seasons). But, if you like horror – watch the seasons I suggested. They are worth the binge.
