Ugh, it’s happened again – a cough that just won’t go away. It seems that every March, I get this lingering cough. It worsens at night. I don’t, nor have I ever, liked cough syrup. It never really seemed to work for me and when I can, I prefer to use natural remedies. So, what are the best cough remedies that have gotten me through the past week and half? Here are the ones that truly work for me:
Raw Honey in Hot Water
This is a great go-to remedy. Heat up some water, (to the same temperature you would for tea), and add about 2 spoonfuls of raw honey. Wait until it’s cool enough to drink. It never fails to calm my coughing. I usually add a slice of lemon too, to better the taste.
A cup of Pineapple Juice
For whatever reason, pineapple juice seems to work better than cough syrup, (for me at least). I found this remedy a long time ago and only tried in when I was out of raw honey. It did calm my cough and it doesn’t taste bad either.
Gargle Salt Water
This can work in a pinch, especially during a coughing spell. Dissolve some sea salt in warm water and gargle the mixture for a great cough remedy that works quickly.
Sip Tea
Most types of tea help boost the immune system anyhow, so it’s a good way to sooth your throat and calm coughing. I prefer green tea, but if it’s nighttime, get out the chamomile :).
If none of these work for you, the best cough medicine that I have found over-the-counter that doesn’t make me gag is the generic Delsym. I’m not saying it tastes great, (because no cough suppressant does), but it does work if nothing else is helping.
Keep that immune system boosted so you don’t have to deal with a cough. (Even though, you likely still will at some point).
